Social Innovation Fund Picks $50 Million Winners
Nearly a dozen organizations from around the country will share in the first round of Social Innovation Fund (SIF) grants from the federal government totaling $50 million. Combined with private matching funds of $74 million raised so far, more than $123 million will be targeted toward scaling up innovative nonprofit programs.

YMCA of the USA Now ‘Officially' The Y
The YMCA has joined a growing list of the nation's largest nonprofits that are reinventing themselves with a new brand and logo. The organization, headquartered in Chicago, Ill., will call itself “The Y,” what it's commonly referred to as, and the national office has started the change, to which all of its 2,680 local affiliates should transition within five years.

Staffing Remains A Problem For Nonprofits
Nearly 40 percent of nonprofits lack adequate staff to deliver programs and services, according to results of a national survey released by the Johns Hopkins University Center for Civil Society Studies.
Almost a third of organizations reported net workforce reductions during the six months preceding the survey (October 2009-March 2010). In contrast, 23 percent reported employment gains during the same period and another 46 percent reported no change, despite facing expanded needs.

NJ Imposes Social Services Contract Comp Caps
Any nonprofit contracted to work with the New Jersey Department of Human Services or Department of Children and Families will now be subject to caps on how much of the contract can be apportioned to CEO salaries and employee benefits. The plan, originally unveiled by Gov. Chris Christie this past April, went into effect July 1.
The move is being watched by social service agencies across the nation as a possible precursor to what might happen in other states that are strapped for cash, as is New Jersey.

LeBron Scores For Boys & Girls Clubs
LeBron James isn't the only one walking away with cash after his big announcement tonight on ESPN. James, a longtime supporter of the Atlanta, Ga.-based Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA), has selected the charity as the beneficiary of the projected $2.5 million to be raised at tonight's event at the local BGCA of Greenwich, Conn., and its airing on the sports network.
The local affiliate is celebrating is 100 th anniversary this year, making it one of the oldest organizations in the country. BGCA of Greenwich declined to comment for this article, and Nate Smeltz, a spokesperson for ESPN, said the network had no input as to where the announcement would be made.

Nonprofit Postal Rates Targeted For Hike
As the nonprofit community determines just how much they might see postal rates increase next year, it's clear that Standard Mail Parcels will get hit with the largest increases – 23 percent – under an exigent rate case filed by the United States Postal Service (USPS) today.
How much the nonprofit rate for Standard Parcel or other categories used by nonprofits will increase is unclear, but USPS appears to be moving toward having categories cover more of their costs to handle.

Research Changing Image Of Volunteering
The theme of the National Conference on Volunteering and Service going on in New York City is “It's Up To You,” yet the call is not so much about increasing the sheer number of volunteers as it is finding the most effective people and measuring results.
Volunteering is no longer for the weekend do-gooder. That fluffy image will be a faint, quaint memory to many of the nearly 6,000 service leaders gathered at the Hilton and Sheraton hotels. A process that has been going on for the past 18 months, called Reimagining Service, seeks to put in place an infrastructure for developing the best service leaders and then holding them to account for results.
