AFP's Paulette Maehara To Retire

By Paul Clolery

Paulette Maehara, president and CEO of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) since 1998, will retire in March 2011, The Non Profit Times has learned. It was not immediately known if she would be on the job through AFP's annual conference, slated for next March 20-23 in Chicago.

According to a memo obtained by The NonProfit Times , an announcement is planned for next week. There is no word on a successor, although sources have said that a search committee and executive recruitment firm are both in the process of being developed. A call to an AFP spokesperson was not immediately returned.

Evolutions during her tenure include: a name change from the National Society of Fundraising Executives (NSFRE) to AFP in 2000, as well as a move to new offices in Arlington, Va., in 2007; a 10,000 increase in membership to more than 30,000 along with 50 new chapters; changes in the organization's governance structure and establishing an more robust international presence.

It has been a challenging few years in the Arlington, Va.-based association. AFP's conferences have been down significantly in attendance and the organization did go through layoffs to close a budget gap, as did many organizations in a recessionary economy.

NJ Imposes Social Services Contract Comp Caps

Any nonprofit contracted to work with the New Jersey Department of Human Services or Department of Children and Families will now be subject to caps on how much of the contract can be apportioned to CEO salaries and employee benefits. The plan, originally unveiled by Gov. Chris Christie this past April, went into effect July 1.

The move is being watched by social service agencies across the nation as a possible precursor to what might happen in other states that are strapped for cash, as is New Jersey.

Nonprofit Postal Rates Targeted For Hike

As the nonprofit community determines just how much they might see postal rates increase next year, it's clear that Standard Mail Parcels will get hit with the largest increases – 23 percent – under an exigent rate case filed by the United States Postal Service (USPS) today.

How much the nonprofit rate for Standard Parcel or other categories used by nonprofits will increase is unclear, but USPS appears to be moving toward having categories cover more of their costs to handle.

Research Changing Image Of Volunteering

The theme of the National Conference on Volunteering and Service going on in New York City is “It's Up To You,” yet the call is not so much about increasing the sheer number of volunteers as it is finding the most effective people and measuring results.

Volunteering is no longer for the weekend do-gooder. That fluffy image will be a faint, quaint memory to many of the nearly 6,000 service leaders gathered at the Hilton and Sheraton hotels. A process that has been going on for the past 18 months, called Reimagining Service, seeks to put in place an infrastructure for developing the best service leaders and then holding them to account for results.
