LeBron James isn't the only one walking away with cash after his big announcement tonight on ESPN. James, a longtime supporter of the Atlanta, Ga.-based Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA), has selected the charity as the beneficiary of the projected $2.5 million to be raised at tonight's event at the local BGCA of Greenwich, Conn., and its airing on the sports network.
The local affiliate is celebrating is 100 th anniversary this year, making it one of the oldest organizations in the country. BGCA of Greenwich declined to comment for this article, and Nate Smeltz, a spokesperson for ESPN, said the network had no input as to where the announcement would be made.
“The Decision,” during which James will announce where he'll play next, will air on ESPN tonight at 9 p.m. Eastern, and the proceeds will go towards the athlete's vision to construct basketball courts for youth across the country.
BGCA President and CEO Roxanne Spillet said via a statement: “We were thrilled to hear from LeBron's organization over this past weekend with this most generous gesture. Taking time out of what I am sure is a most difficult decision, and creating an opportunity for our Clubs and members to benefit, is just tremendous.”
