Calculating Your Tech Spending
How much should an organization spend on technology?
That is a difficult question to answer directly, but Andy Wolber, executive director of NPower Michigan, offered suggestions about various aspects of technology and what kind of costs can be expected for each.

With each one, however, a variety of factors, including size and scope of the organization, and change the figures. The important items:
- Computer $1,200. Questions include: laptop or desktop, Mac or PC, repair or replace?
- Software: As little as $50. Cost here includes the operating system, Internet security and accounting software. Upgrading could be an issue, although not necessarily, as could training.
- Printer: $500. Standardizing on printers from one manufacturer could save money. Factors to consider include pages per minute, inkjet vs. laser, duplex, whether it is networkable and black & white vs. color.
- Backup drives: $250. Options include remote and local backup.
- DSL: $500/year. 1.5Mbps down/384kbps up, dynamic IP address, one-year term is good.
- Wireless router, firewall, print server: $100.
- Domain email and Web site: $10/year. Services are available for nonprofits.
- Training: $200 per person per class is an acceptable rate.
- Smartphone: $400 plus $100 a month
